Big Cricket Profits
Whatever cricketers may feel about the particular demands of touring in India and Pakistan, the enthusiasm of the public in those countries makes tours there extremely profitable. The Australian team whicn last year toured Ceylon, India and South Africa brought home a profit of $130,000. There was a guarantee of $103,500 from the Indian Board of Control, and in the other countries the Australians took a percentage of the gate receipts. The gross takings in South Africa were $127,000 and $lOO,OOO of this was debited as expenses. Little wonder the Australian Board of Control has been able to increase its payments to players for the forthcoming test series with England. This season the Australian players will each receive $lBO a test, an increase of $2O, and expenses for each player have been increased from $3O to $4O. Umpires will be paid $l3O a test, $2O more than previously. New Zealand test players do not receive match fees, but are reimbursed for expenses.
