Daylight Burglaries Common In Chch
Daylight burglaries in Christchurch are common. The items stolen are often large—television sets, radiograms, and stereogram amplifiers.
Detective Chief Inspector B. Wilkinson, the officer-in-charge of the Christchurch C. said yesterday that no particular area was the burglars’ target. “I can understand that a burglar can walk into a house, steal something and walk out with it under his coat and nobody will see him. What I don’t believe is that somebody can steal something as big as a television set and leave without somebody seeing him. “The burglar must have transport to carry these things away. There has been a lot of bulky electronic equipment stolen in Christchurch recently." Mr Wilkinson remarked: “Just because somebody walks into a house and walks out with a television set in broad daylight don't assume he is the television serviceman. Take the number of
his car and telephone us. We will check it.” In 133 house burglaries in. Christchurch in August, offenders gained entry through unlocked doors 32 times. Eighteen times they used keys to get in. Unlocked windows also gave easy access, said Mr Wilkinson.
