CHATHAM IS. COMPLAINTS
New Crayfish Regulations fH.Z Press Association) PAEROA, September 4. Experienced crayfish fishermen at Whitianga claim that the new regulations governing crayfish pots are far from satisfactory. The amended regulations require an opening in the pot for undersized crayfish to escape. The fishermen say that! small crays. once in Ute pot, are reluctant to leave the! bigger ones which are trapped. They point out also that! predators, such as octupi and moray eels, after entering the pots to prey on the trapped! crays, are free to leave the! traps. ■ Before the new regulations: came into effect, vermin entering the pots were trapped.! In fact so many were caught that they were rapidly being thinned out thus reducing the losses caused by predators. !<
