Japanese Government Grants Scholarships

WELLINGTON, September 4. The Japanese Ministry of Education is offering an undergraduate scholarship and a number of post-graduate scholarships to New Zealand students, for study in Japan, the Japanese Embassy has announced today.

The undergraduate scholarship, to be held for five years from April, 1971, will have an allowance of 36,000 yen (about 5=90) per month, transport to Japan will be free and tuition fees will be waived. A preliminary one year, course in Japanese at the University of Tokyo will be followed by a four year course at the department of Japanese studies at the university. Applicants must be New Zealand citizens, aged between 18 and 25 on April 1, 1971, have passed university entrance and have had more more than 12 years of school education. They will be examined in English or French, mathematics, world history

and the Japanese language. The postgraduate scholarships are for study of the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Successful applicants will spend six months at a special Japanese-language course at! the University of Osaka. They! will then transfer to the appropriate university for their field of study. The scholarships have a monthly grant of 37.000 yen (about S9O). A grant to meet

- immediate expenses on arrival in Japan of 15,000 yen, and an annual grant of 30,000 yen for field-study work. Air transport to Japan will be free and all fees will be waived. Tenure of the scholarship may be eitner for two years from April, 1971. or 18 months from October 1971. Applicants must be under 35 years of age and be New Zealand citizens.
