SYDNEY. The New Zealand men finished fifth when the Australian inter-state squash rackets championships ended at the week-end. However, New Zealand finished strongly, defeating South Australia by 122 points to 108 after matches and sets were level. S. O’Dwyer beat A. McCullock,. 9-4, 9-4, 9-7; D. Burmeister lost to D. Stephenson, 6-9. 2-9, 9-5, 4-9, D. Preston beat D. Stone. 9-10, D-3 6-9, 9-5, 9-4, and L. Greene lost to T. Quick, 8-10, 7-9, 9-1. 8-10. The manager of the New Zealand team (Mr J. Malcolm) said his players had performed well against the more experienced Australians during the championships. "New Zealand players beat, among the seeded men. K. Hiscoe, and did well in the interstate competition, being beaten only by New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.
"They were not hitting quite hard enough, perhaps because the ball plays slightly differently from what they are used to in New Zealand.
"The New Zealand women players, in particular, will have to hit a lot harder and play squash strokes instead of tennis strokes.”
The team placings were: New South Wales 1, Queensland 2. Victoria 3. Australia under 23 4. New Zealand 5. South Australia 6. Western Australia 7, Tasmania 8.
