Knock-Out To Lancashire (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON. H. Pilling hit Lancashire to victory over Sussex in the Gillette Cup one-day knock-out cricket final on Saturday. Lancashire won by six wickets, with an unbroken fifthwicket stand of 72 in 55 minutes between Pilling (70 not out) and the Indian test wicketkeeper, F. M. Engineer, who made an unbeaten 31.
The 60-overs-a-side match tilted In Lancashire’s favour when brilliant ground fielding and tight spin bowling restricted Sussex to a patchy 184 for nine.
Sussex fought hard to stop Lancashire’s victory march and had four wickets down for 113, but Pilling and Engineer settled the outcome, Pilling getting the winning run.
Results of county championship matches which ended on Friday were:
At Worcester: Warwickshire 168 and 322/4 dec. (R. Kanhai 132 not out) drew with Worcestershire 253/2 dec. and 179/5. Worcestershire 9 points, Warwickshire 1.
At Bournemouth: Hampshire 311 and 135/2 dec. (B. Richards 81 not out) lost to Somerset 211 (A. Clarkson 71; K. Wheatley 4/38) and 239/4 (R. Virgin 108, A. Clarkson 63) by 6 wickets. Hampshire 11 points, Somerset 17.
At Folkestone: Leicestershire 152 and 229 (B. Davison 63: D. Underwood 6/58) lost to Kent 421/7 dec. by an innings and 40 runs. Kent 23 points, Leicestershire 2.
At Cardiff: Lancashire 303/5 dec. and 77/5 drew with Glamorgan 138 and 301/5 dec. (A. Lewis 78, P. Walker 114). Glamorgan 2 points. Lancashire 11.
