Pensioners’ Meeting

Sir, —As one who was absent from the pensioners meeting

held recently, in the Civic Theatre, I think I prefer my absenteeism to the company of one who was present and who is reported as saying that those who were absent can “starve ’in their apathy.”— Yours, etc., A. F. R. PARR. September 4, 1970.

Sir,—Regarding Mr G. G. Walker’s remark at the pensioners’ meeting in the Civic Theatre yesterday, at which he expressed his disgust at the small number present and said, “I would say to those who are not here, if you want to be apathetic, then starve in your apathy,” we do appreciate what this meeting is trying to achieve for us. But Mr Walker did not allow for the fact that many who would have liked to be present were prevented by age and in many cases, like myself, by poor health.—Yours, etc., BREAD-LINE WIDOW. September 4, 1970.

Sir, —How could the organisers expect a large attendance of pensioners at the meeting held in the Civic Theatre yesterday? The only means of transport for myself and many others would have been by taxi.—Yours, eta, SEPTUAGENARIAN. September 4, 1970.
