Jury Service
Sir,—lt is absurd that persons over 65 should not be permitted to serve on a jury even if they wish to do so. Their experience of people, and the ways of the world, would very often make them most valuable jurors. Being generally free, they release younger people for other work. And they make good jurors because they are not reluctant jurors, anxious to reach a verdict quickly and get back to the work they have left behind them. With the general shortage of labour that exists in this country, we should be making far more use of our older people. Not only should people over 65 be encouraged to serve on juries, but in general there should be more encouragement for otherwise retired people to remain at work. We need our senior citizens in all walks of life. —Yours, etc., NEAR-SENEX. September 2, 1970.
