Homer A Woman?
Sir,—Surely to goodness “The Press” should be the last paper in the world to publish without comment an American suggestion that the “Odyssey”, was written by a woman. Was not that the theory of Samuel (“Erewhon”) Butler? And were not his contributions part of the literary glory of the infant “Press”? Alas, reputation is a fleeting thing, and a prophet is not without honour except in his own country.— Yours, etc., DIANA GREGSON. September 2, 1970. [As Butler’s interesting theory was never adopted as editorial policy by “The Press” which would automatically have translated it from speculation to established fact —we are content to let the battle rage, without comment Ed., "The Press.”]
