Stablemates Sprint Fast

A very smart last halfmile of strong work over ground by Sailing Home and an outstanding sprint by the stablemates, Pericles and Red Chips, were features of a busy morning’s training at Riccarton yesterday.

Pericles (D. Meier) and Red Chips (N. Cowles) sped home from the half-mile on the No. 1 grass, which provided excellent footing, in 47 3-ssec. Sailing Home (F. Skelton) worked up to speed from the nine-furlong peg in her solo run and was timed to run home from the half in 48 4-ssec. Pericles, obviously improved by his lone race at the Grand National meeting last month, might take beating in the hack sprint at Ashburton next Tuesday. Sailing Home and Red Chips are not engaged on the first day of the Ashburton meeting. The mare will probably run in the Ashburton Cup next Saturday week and Red Chips will contest the open sprint on the same day.

Quetta 18. Felling) shaped welt to lead his stablemates, Harold Bank <E. Low) and David William <G. Lee), by a length and a half at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 31 3- the last half-mile in 50 4- Quetta and Harold Bank will be rivals in the Gordon's Gin Handicap next Tuesday. Lord Macquario (R. McCann) and Flower Girl <D. Sanderson) took Imin 18 4-ssec for six furlongs and ran the last four in 51 4-ssec. Both will be making fresh starts among the open milers at Ashburton on Tuesday.

Overnight (D. Reed) and Bimerah <G. Mein) were together throughout seven furlongs in Imin 30 3-ssec, the last four in 52 l-ssee. Igloo (L. Didham) took 51 3-ssec for his solo half-mile. He has his first test as an open sprinter in the Flying Handicap next Tuesday. Of the lesser-lights with engagements at Ashburton, none impressed more than Kelly Jack (Miss J. Rennie) which led Best Game <D. Tucker) by three lengths ending six furlongs in Imin 16 4-ssec, the last four in 40 2-ssec. El Ceigo (D. Reed) was two lengths ahead of Dantic (G. Mein) at the end of their halfmile in 51 2-ssec. Lockett (F. Skelton) and King's Club (Mrs V. Clutterbuck) ran in from the half-mile together in 52 2-ssec. Lord Nelson <R. McCann) equalled this time for his solo effort.

Time and Tide (Miss H. Lindsay) was let off with an easy half-mile. He ran home in 53sec. •He will race as a sprinter on the second day at Ashburton.

Shipmaster (G. Mein) was allotted a similar task and took 53 3-ssec. He has no immediate engagements. Savoir Faire (B. Pelling) led Lincoln’s Inn (G. Mein) by half a length after six furlongs in imin 22sec, the last four in 53 l-ssec. Meneleus (E. Low) took 52 3- for his half-mile and Sony (G. McLean) completed a similar task in 51 l-ssec. Kurd Mahal (B. Pelling) and Bunny Girl (G. Lee) made good time in their run from the halfmile. They came home in 49 4Palley (D. Reed) and Haxton (I. Stewart) also created a good impression. They completed a Similar task in 49 l-ssec. Offensive (P. Thistoll) was shading Full Pitch (M. Cohen) with Country Doc (R. Holmes) three lengths back ending six furlongs in Imin 16 3-ssec, the last four in 49sec. Stream (D. Sanderson) led Vodka Lad (G. Mein) and Funny Ways (P. Anning) by a length at the end of half a mile in 50sec. Euripydies (P. Smith) took 51sec for his solo half-mile. Expel will be able to race as a hurdler at Ashburton. He gained his qualifying ticket when he schooled well with Phenomenal (B. Pelling). Expel was ridden by his trainer, G. D. Lee.
