CHATHAMS SINKING

(Special Crapdf. N.Z.P.A.) WAITANGI, Aug. 19. The fishing vessel Providence sank about 1.30 p.m. today on the east side of Pitt Island after hitting Passage Reef, near Canister Cove and Glory Bay. The Providence was a 42ft steel craft Its crew of two, Peter Penrose, single, of Christchurch, and Robby Jacobs, single, of Chatham Islands, abandoned the craft about 1.25 p.m. and were picked up by another vessel, the Cascade. They were then taken on board the Gallilee to Owenga, the eastern bay of the main island in the Chathams group.
