TENSION AT PRISON

Lessening Expected (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 20. Tension among inmates and staff at Paparua Prison recently was expected to ease now that the incident had been the subject of a magisterial inquiry, the Minister of Justice (Mr Riddiford) advised Mr P. Blanchfield (Lab., Westland) today. Mr Blanchfield had asked whether the fear of unrest was real, and whether it affected the staff and all prisoners. He cited the evidence given by an escaper that he was afraid of the unrest and thought that an escape charge would give him a chance to be transferred to a North Island prison. Mr Riddiford admitted that there had been tension, “arising from an incident where inmates protested against the alleged use of unnecessary force in a certain case.”
