Commonwealth Games

Sir, —New Zealand has carried a high crime rate. This is just another undesirable extension of our

hitherto drab, insipid society. With the introduction of the Pan-Pacific Arts Festivals, the advent of a new town hall complex, the development of a resident symphony orchestra, and recently, the confirmation of the 1974 Commonwealth Games. Christchurch leads the way towards establishing a definite style of living and a sense of national belonging and civic pride. All those against these things should remember that if New Zealand is to have anything to contribute to the world, It must also become part of the world. If they see fit to force our young people to grow up in an uninteresting environment, then they (the pessimists) will simply have to look to a serious upsurge in crime, and thus, a far greater drain on our public funds than ever dreamt of before. —Yours etc., CREATE COUNTERWEIGHTS.
