Bursaries For Maori Colleges

Sir, —Our seminar, “Maori Education,” was partly designed for people like “Keep Faith”—those who misunderstand, are unaware of, or gloss over the problems we face in a money-inspired, individualistic western society. Please don’t criticise Maori colleges without appreciating all reasons for their establishment Success measured In pakeha terms (examination passes) reveals their continuing desirability. How many European parents teach their children ballet and music? Maoris likewise recognise accomplished teachers of “Maoritanga.” Furthermore, they are communalistic and enjoy group activities. We are combating misunderstanding, and “Keep Faith” exemplifies our task. Look honestly at the facts. Many, including pakehas, don’t share “affluent New Zealand” with “Keep Faith.” Enough of lipservice and patronising attitudes! Sincere congratulations to the Association of Anglican Women and the Canter bury Students' Association for recent bursary decisions and replacing words with action.— Yours, etc., G. B. KERR, University Maori Club, August 20, 1970.
