DUNEDIN, July 26. Fund-raising efforts by the New Zealand Federation of Country Women’s Institutes has enabled the purchase of a machine which will detect rare congenital diseases in newborn babies in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
The president of the federation (Mrs Eva Gane) on Friday presented a cheque for $5OOO to Professor A. M. O. Veaie, honorary director of the New Zealand Medical Research Council’s human genetics research unit at the Otago Medical School, for the purchase of a second punch index machine. The cheque commemorates the New Zealand jubilee year of the institute, 1970-71.
