Students Protest
Students at the Christ church Teachers’ College yesterday sent a telegram of protest to the Minister of Education (Mr Taiboys). It read: “The Christchurch Teachers’ College student teacher branch of the Post Primary Teachers’ Association is incensed at your apparent ignorance as Minister of Education of teachers* working conditions, salary and professional status. The future of the profession appears bleak to student teachers.” A spokesman for the teachers said the telegram was authorised yesterday by 100 at a meeting which was the forerunner of a special meeting of the Canterbury region of the P.P.T.A. tomorrow evening. Teachers at Rangiora High School have sent telegrams to the Prime Minister (Sir Keith Holyoake) and to Mr Taiboys. The principal (Mr T. M. Penny) said that the teachers were “very annoyed” at the picture that the Minister had presented on “Gallery” of the teaching profession and the status in general of the teachers.
