‘NO HEALTH HAZARD’
Complaints On Pig Farm Complaints by residents of smell and a health risk from a pig farm at Johns Road, made to the council in a petition last month, were again discussed by the Waimairi County Council on Thursday evening. Dr J. A. Andrews, Deputy Medical Officer of Health, reported that no health hazard could occur unless there was direct handling of pigs or their excreta. Organisms that could spread to man were unlikely to be carried by files. There might be emotional disturbance to neighbours from smells. ' The finance committee reported that It had heard a deputation from residents, but that in discussion later, councillors bad held that the council had acted legally in permitting the pig farm, in a rural zone. The chairman (Mr D. B. Rich) said the committee had inspected the farm, which carried more than 400 pigs, and it had been decided to ask the Department of Agriculture for a report.
