OBITUARY Mr J. Lister
Mr John Lister, who died at Timaru this week at the age of 72, made a vast contribution in the sphere of ambulance work. In 1927, Mr Lister became associated with the Lyttelton Railway Ambulance Division. By 1936, when be was transferred to Greymouth, he bad attained the rank of superintendent. Mr Lister was responsible for the formation of an ambulance division on the West Coast He joined the Timaru railways staff in January, 1937, and, within 18 months, was appointed officer-in-command of the ambulance division, with which he was connected until his retirement from the railways in 1960. Mr Lister also played a prominent role in the affairs of the Timaru St John Ambulance Association and brigade. He became superintendent of the Timaru Corps, and in 1951 he was appointed district superintendent of the South Canterbury sub-district, a post he held until he retired from ambulance work in 1964. In 1956, Mr Lister received the award of Serving Brother of the Venerable Order of St John. Bom in Glasgow, Mr Lister served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in the First World War. He was wounded on Gallipoli. Subsequently, he saw service in Palestine and on the Western Front He ended his war service with the Army of Occupation in Germany in 1919. During the Second World War, Mr Lister was with the National Military Reserve at Timaru and at Burnham military camp, where he was sergeant in charge of the Regimental Aid Post. Mr Lister, who was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, is survived by his daughter.
