Misconception On Costs

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Some people bad a misconception about the costs of the inquiry into racing, the chairman (Sir Thaddeus McCarthy) said at the hearing yesterday. Some people thought that the racing clubs or conferences were paying the costs of the Royal Commission, he said. “An observation in the newspapers the other day gave support to this view. “I have no doubt that the parties concerned in this report are finding it pretty expensive: but as I understand the situation the costs of this commission are borne entirely by the Government and the conferences or clubs have not been asked to contribute. So I imagine that the figure quoted in respect of the trotting gentlemen which appeared in the paper the other day relates to their costs,” he said. Mr B. McClelland, counsel for the trotting conference, confirmed this.
