Nelson Bays Has Narrow Win

“The Press’* Special Service NELSON. A try seven minutes from full-time gave Nelson Bays a 14-12 win over Canterbury subunions in a representative Rugby match at Motueka yesterday. The try came from one of Nelson Bays’s few excursions into Canterbury sub-unions’ territory during the second half Canterbury sub-unions began the game well and went to a quick 6-0 lead before slipping into disjointed and sluggish play to trail 6-11 at half-time. This was the second defeat for Canterbury sub-unions in the three matches they have played so far on their tour of the Seddon Shield districts. The next and final game is against Marlborough on Saturday. The touring team’s forwards dominated most of the second half yesterday and only

in the line-outs were they matched by the Nelson Bays eight. Their scrummaging was more effective, with the hooker, J. Sheehan, taking eight tight-heads to three, and they were devastating in several passing rushes. In this sphere G. Henderson, W. Scott and Sheehan were often prominent.

Keen tackling, particularly by the Nelson Bays fiveeighths, J. Chadwick, helped curb the Canterbury subunion’s back-line, although the wing, F. Fowler, scored one fine try and the centre. D. Palmer, made some strong runs.

The former Canterbury B representative, C. Cochrane, had a fine game as captain for Nelson Bays. Goal-kicking failures were expensive for Canterbury subunions, six attempts out of seven being missed.
