SPEECH BY QUEEN
Commonwealth Day In U.K.
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, June 12.
The Queen today described the Commonwealth as an imaginative experiment in human relations, and the inter-dependence of peoples on a vast scale. The community of nations, she said in a Commonwealth Day message, was held together not by power or compulsion, but by a common interest in strengthening the bonds of humanity.
The Queen said that a deep interest in humanity and a direct concern for people was a characteristic of young people today, and they were seldom afraid of ideas. The Commonwealth ideal was in tune with the desires of youth to find practical ways of increasing human friendship and happiness. Britain will celebrate Commonwealth Day on Saturday, to coincide with the official celebrations of the Queen's Birthday. The Duchess of Gloucester will represent the queen at a service in the Guildhall, attended by the Lord Mayor and the High Commissioners of the Commonwealth.
