HOSPITAL STAFFING
‘Conscription A Possibility’
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE, June 12.
Women may eventually have to be conscripted to staff hospitals in Australia, the federal secretary of the Hospital Employers’ Federation (Mr Keith Mitchell) said today. “Nothing meaningful Is being done to arrest the tragedy of the increasing nursing shortage,” he said.
Mr Mitchell said that the nursing profession was in danger of collapse. “In two or three years, we may be facing a situation where the Government will be compelled to introduce a form of conscription of female labour to staff hospitals," he said.
