German Measles

Sir, I read last Friday that a German measles vaccine will arrive in New Zealand on June 8. However, the vaccination programme for primary school children will not start until July 27. Can the Health Department explain the reason for the delay? Already winter is here and the danger of a rubella epidemic increasing.—Yours, DELAYED ACTION.

June 9, 1970. [Dr D. A. Andrews, deputy medical officer of health, replies: “The shipment of rubella vaccine that arrived on June 8 was only the first of several due to arrive over the next few weeks. The vaccine has to be stockpiled in Wellington and distribution to hospital boards and district offices of the Department of Health arranged. This cannot be done overnight Rubella is not a disease with a higher incidence in winter, and therefore there is not the urgency for immunisation implied by your correspondent.”]
