Street Trees

Sir, —Several years ago residents in Fairview Street were canvassed by the City Council to plant trees, one outside each property, at 10s each. They were to be small, flowering one. They planted tall, ugly ones, which grew over 20 feet. Their big leaves block up the channelling, and in our properties have interfered with telephones. The roots have broken up channelling badly, also coming through asphalt paths to the danger of pedestrians. I have written two letters to the City

Engineer, but nothing is being done about it.—Yours, RESIDENT. May 25, 1970. [The city engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies; “Trees planted In Fairview Street in 1949 were sorbus, which are classed as a small-growing tree. 1 can find no record of any letter being received from a resident of Fairview Street since 1964. One inquiry from a resident was received through a councillor relating to the trees in Fairview Street. The footpath is generally in good condition, but there is evidence of roots damaging the path in three positions. These will be repaired in the near future. The side-channels have been affected by tree roots, but labour shortages and other commitments of a more urgent nature have delayed repairs.”]
