Shipping Freights

Sir.—My thanks to “J.M.R.”

for his courtesy in replying to my letter of June 4. No, I was not joking in stating that New Zealand received most-favoured-nation treatment from Britain for entry of our produce, particularly dairy produce. An editorial in a Sunday newspaper of June 7 referred to Mr Marshall’s published acknowledgment that, "Try /as New Zealand may, there Is no market other than Britain for 22 million lambs, 176,000 tons of butter, and 75.000 tons of cheese." Our Trade Minister should know. Furthermore, under a New Zealand amending act to the Companies Act Of 1955 British shipping companies must produce in New Zealand their balance-sheets, to which our Ministers have access. This would appear to disprove his concluding statement that British shipping companies are protected by their government in disclosing their financial status.—Yours, etc., A. R. G. CLAYTON. Wellington, June 11, 1970.
