CRITICAL VIEW
New Lanes System The new lanes on the Main South Road at Church Corner were a calamity and absolutely stupid, said Cr A. V Shuker, at a meeting of the Paparua County Council last evening. He said he had observed the lanes in operation and was astounded at the numbei of near misses. It was lucky that there was a doctor and a cemetery nearby.
The job had been designed by the Ministry of Works which had made the mistake of going contrary to the rule of the road by giving turning traffic the right-of-way to Yaldhurst Road, said the County Engineer (Mr A. Dyhrberg). On Cr Shuker’s motion, it was decided to ask the chairman of the National Roads Board (the Minister of Works, Mr Allen) to inspect the layout.
Until the introduction of the traffic lanes at Church Corner the council' decided to impose parking restrictions in the vicinity. Approval was given to a no-stopping restriction extending 200 feet from the corner of Hansons Lane on the south side of the road, along the Main South Road in front of Hay’s building to 258 feet on the Main South Road past Church Corner on both sides of the road, and 100 feet on the south side of Yaldhurst Road to the bus stop.
