INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS
Strong support for a proposed industrial relations centre at Victoria University of Wellington, was expressed at a meeting of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association yesterday. The president (Mr J. D. Bull) said it was proposed that the centre open on September 1, with Mr F. J. L. Young as director, Mr N. S. Woods, as visiting fellow, and Mr E. J. Keating, as lecturer.
A memorandum from the director of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr A. R. Dellow) said the proposal bad the support of his federation, the New Zealand Federation, the Federation of Labour, the State Services Association, and the Department of Labour. The Minister of Labour (Mr Marshall) had said that development courses for practitioners were absolutely essential, and there was a need for research, said a report from Mr Young. Mr Dellow said the university had sufficient finance to start the centre but he estimated that a further $16,000 a year for 10 years would be needed to make it fully effective.
At yesterday’s meeting Professor N. C. Phillips, vicechancellor of the University of Canterbury, said he strongly supported the proposed centre and was only sorry Canterbury had not thought of it first.
