Improvement Noted At Chemical Works
There had been considerable improvement at the Hornby fertiliser works of Kempthorne, Prosser and Company, Ltd, and landscaping and general tidying-up had enhanced the appearance, the Health Department’s chemical inspector (Mr D. R. Pullen) said in a report to a meeting of the Paparua County Council last evening.
Both the council and the department have been keeping an eye on the work since residents complained last year of fumes and dust. Mr Pullen said that many of the previous problems had disappeared or were at least less troublesome. There had been no recent problems with the acid plant and all sulphur was how kept under cover.
Some dust emission had occurred from the dressing and grinding plants, but as no more DDT was to be processed after June 30 it was expected that this particular smell and dust nuisance would no longer exist. Mr Pullen said that tests on the atmosphere would continue and the works management would be told as soon as possible of complaints so that the offending plant could be attended to. Extension. —Local Authorities Loans Board approval was given for a $140,000 loan to pay for a second floor for the council offices. The chairman (Mr D. H. Warren) said more space was an urgent need. Sockburn Park.—The assistant engineer (Mr T. W. Lucas) reported on a proposal to establish a putting green at Sockburn Park swimming centre, but it was recalled that the RiccartonHornby Jaycees had proposed to install playground equipment It was decided to ask
the Jaycees for their plans. Mr Lucas was asked to make an estimate of the cost of btillding tearooms at the centre.
Water Supply.—After a request from the West Melton Domain Board for a water supply for the domain, it was agreed that staff should report on a scheme to supply the whole of the township.
Barriers.—lt was decided to erect barriers to prevent motor vehicles and cyclists from using the right-of-way
between the Main South Road and Ballantyne Avenue. Sockburn.
Hazards—The council referred to the Ministry of Works a letter from Mrs V. Mitchell, concerning traffic hazards at the corner of Shands Road and Amyes Road, Hornby, and asked the Ministry to study Shands Road problems as a whole. It was pointed out that a pedestrian crossing was needed near the Shands Road-Amyes Road intersection, and that the new Hornby school would add to traffic problems. Survey*.—The council agreed to a request from the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority that it be allowed, with council permis-. sion, to make planning surveys outside its district. The proposal came after the refusal by the council last year to allow that part of the county outside the authority’s district to be incorporated in the district.
