County Council Business
Sir, —At different times I have attended local body meetings, usually receiving the agenda and being shown to a seat, the chairman opening with a remark of welcome and thanks for the interest. This courteous procedure obviously is not personal, but respect to the ratepayers whom they serve, the business being discussed freely and audibly. I attended the Ellesmere County Council’s meeting today. The clerk politely gave me the agenda and showed me to a seat. The chairman opened the meeting and proceeded. I received odd stares from different councillors. The business of concern to me was inaudible, and a lot of chit-chat followed. At the lunch break 1 expressed disapproval to Mr Stephens and asked what happened—the business was to be taken in committee at a later sub-meeting. This was not the only odd proceeding of the morning.— Yours, etc., M. K. SMART. Irwell, March 16, 1970. [The Ellesmere County Clerk (Mr W. S. K. Drew) had no comment to make on this letter.]
