Canterbury Tennis Team In Form

“The Press” Special Service I WELLINGTON, j The Canterbury tennis team , encountered surprisingly little opposition in its encounters against Wellington and. Hutt Valley at the week-ond. On Saturday Canterbury beat, Wellington, seven matches to ; one. and yesterday it eclipsed ! a weakened Hutt Valiev side, 1 10-1. The matches on both days were affected by the weather, but the rain and wind could not prevent a comprehensive Canterbury rout of the Wellington and Hutt Valley sides. For the men's Wilding Shield team the week-end proved to be a good morale booster with the challenge against Auckland later next month in mind, while 1 for the women, it was also a very heartening display. The men did not lose a match over the two days and the only Canterbury player involved in la loss was the No. 1 woman. i.Miss J. Habgood. who lost both her singles matches. ; On Saturday, playing on asphalt courts at the Wellington club—the venue was shifted! 1 from Central Park because of ; the rain—she lost to the young : Wellington player. Miss P. Kane. 6-0, 6-3. apd yesterday she lost to the experienced Hutt Valley No. 1, Miss C. McLauchlan, 2-6. 6-4. 2-6. While there is cause for re- ' joicing in the Canterbury camp, 1 there is also some cause for 1 concern. ’ The top Canterbury player, J. ; W. Mitchell, seriously strained * his left shoulder in the doubles match against Hutt Valley yesterday and as a result he might 1 be a doubtful starter for the : Wilding Shield challenge. ' Before the injury Mitchell • showed he is a danger to any 1 player he meets. Only bad light stopped him from beating the

j Wellington No. 1. D B. Hawkes, ion Saturday when he was-lead-' ling. 6-2, 5-5. Yesterday he ac(Counted for the evergreen Hutt Valley player. B. Shute, 6-1, 6-4. Hutt Valley was without its I two top regular players, K. O. .Woolcott, who was unavailable for personal reasons, and R. Rae, at present on the Riviera with the Coca-Cola team. But even with those two play, ers in the side it is doubtful that Hutt Valley would have managed to salvage the match. Results (Canterbury names first): v. Hutt Valley Men’s Singles.—J W.
