Defiant Stand By Trist, Huxford

Thirty-one runs were needed to pass Riccarton's first innings total when the last West Christchurch - University batsman. N. A. Huxford. went to the crease. Even with D G. Trist in fine attacking form only sanguine admirers of Huxford’s batting would give the side a better than even chance of scoring the runs but Huxford defended so ably that the pair were within five runs of success when a misunderstanding had Trist run out. Trist batted attractively for his 42 runs, driving strongly. The situation was difficult 11 the time he was batting yet his innings of 64 minutes included eight boundaries T W. Jarvis added 11 to his previous week's total of 68 and the only other West batsman to show form was P. E. Wallace For Riccarton F M Madrussan bowled at lively pace with good control and J. W. Kiddey was as reliable as usual. Riccarton, soon after afternoon tea in the second innings, had lost five wickets for 70 runs. Although wickets were 'falling the runs came quickly but when Madrussan joined P. A Stubbings the flow became a torrent and 50 came up in 28 minutes. Stubbings went on to make a well compiled 87. The West bowling was noteworthy more for quantity than quality but gave B F Hastings and Jarvis the opportunity of displaying their leg spinners Umpires: Messrs W. R Hobbs and G. Aitken.
