Collegians Lapse After Good Start
Old Collegians began the dav well against St Albans oh Hagley No. 1 and the overnight score of 33 for one was taken to 83 before another wicket fell. Batting was not easy on the damp pitch and the flight of the ball after pitching often difficult to predict. D. S. Banks batted ably, being in turn watchful and aggressive. His partner. J. W. Gebbie. gained confidence from this and showed a return to his promising form as a youth.
However, the dismissal of Banks virtually spelt the end of his team’s resistance and the side was forced to follow on 129 runs behind. K. I. Kerries, with a long accurate spell in the morning, fully deserved his four wickets and received good support from R. Howell, who bowled briskly, and the steady off-spinner. J. Harrison. A third-wicket partnership of 60 from J. H. M. Dawson and H J. Taylor saved Old Collegians from outright defeat and together they took the score to 109. Although another four wickets fell for 23 runs St Albans could not get past the broad bat of J. S.. Baxter, whose wicket did not fall until 150. Dawson was helped by deplorable fielding but he often hit risky powerful forcing shots in front of the wicket. St Albans relied mainly oh the spin of Harrison and J W. Burtt and although the ball burned and lifed unexpectedly it was not sharp enough to he a real danger. empires: Messrs T. Mathie • nd F. Fielding.
