Edinburgh Festival
Sir,—! disagree with Mr Hauxvell’s statement this morning: . . . “You look at Edinburgh, it has now become an excuse to sell shortbread, tartans, and bag pipes.” This is nonsense. He evidently does not understand Scotland, or the Scottish people. The Edinburgh Festival is a yearly, much-looked-forward-to event, with people going to it from all over the world- Shortbread, tartans, and bag pipes may be sold, but this part of the eveht is incidental. One has to attend .this festival to appreciate adequately the great enthusiasm there is for the whole spectacular, heart-warming, and colourful display. Many New Zealanders repeatedly return to Scotland, mainly to see the Edinburgh Festival I Yours, etc., BETHUNE. February 26, 1970.
