Schools And The Royal Visit
Sir, —There appears to be so much confusion and mis' understanding concerning ar I rangements for primary school children to see the Queen at the Addington 1 Show Grounds during her (Christchurch visit next month i that a clear official statement ion the matter would seem to I be called for. Have all Christchurch children from Stan i dard 3 to Form 11 been given . the opportunity of going with i a school party? If only some schools are sending children, -who decided that some child- ■ ren should- be denied the opI portunity of going? Have teachers been asked to volunI teer to take children, and, if so. are some schools refraining on the ground that no ivolunteer teachers are forthj coming? Is the Education ! Board offering free transport ;to schools? There must be ; many who feel that to close schools without offering to take children to the Royal function sounds like a good day at the beach for - some teachers.—Yours, etc., HANNIBAL. ; February 24, 1970 i (Mr W. P. Spencer, secre > tary-manager of the Canterbury Education Board, re plies: “All schools have beer given the opportunity of sending pupils from Standard S upwards, and free transport is being provided. Schools under the board’s control art closing to facilitate the organ isafton of the parties for the Show Grounds and to enable (children not included to have I the opportunity, in the company of their parents, of see ing the Royal visitors. Most I primary schools will be represented at the function.”)
