Sir, —Some 77.000 people have so far signed a petition to save Lake Manapouri Would that the same fervour could be shown to preserve an equally-preclous asset closer to home, beautiful Hag ley Park, which now seems in further danger of encroachment from a sports stadium “in the triangle of land near the Carlton Mill bridge and the Fendalton-Avonside mo torway linking with Salisbury Street.” Cr Skellerup says this is “City Council land.' but I say it is common land —the people’s land—and should be presei ed for them as park land, not a site fot buildings. With radica planning, we can create motorway routes and stadium sites elsewhere —but we car never create another Hagley Park.—Yours, etc., CAM. February 26, 1970. anyone consider this a fair, or even true, statement when one reads the report of the claim on the Oamaru schoolteacher, which was issued under writ of arrest as it was believed that he was about to leave this country? It is disturbing to see the department resorting to court orde>- to secure such refunds.
