SURVEY ON NEEDS OF HANDICAPPED
Branches of the Crippled Children Society throughout New Zealand will be asked to initiate a survey in conjunction with other organisations for handicapped persons, to find out the needs of handicapped people in each area and the desirability of associated organisations working together to fulfil these needs.
This was approved at the quarterly meeting of the New (Zealand Council of the [Crippled Children Society in Christchurch yesterday. It was the first time that the council had met in ChristI church. : The president of the council, Mr J. E. Greenslade, of Palmerston North, said last evening that several branches were already sponsoring a survey to this effect. Mr Greenslade said that the [council also agreed that the [society make representations [to the Royal Commission on • Social Security with the object of having removed from [the Social Security Act any (question of a means test for I permanently disabled persons, [particularly grossly disabled persons. The council agreed to grant $40,000 towards an extensive building project being planned by the Southland branch of the society. The main feature of the building project was training workshops where it was estimated that by 1980 the roll would be 85 trainees.
After the meeting, the 17 members who attended representing all regions of the society in New Zealand, inspected activities at the headquarters of the 'Canterbury
and West Coast branch in Antigua Street and activities at the Canterbury Sheltered Workshop. Mr Greenslade said that in future it was planned to hold one of the four council meetings held each year out of
the headquarters in Wellington.
