TRADESMEN FROM U.S.
Possible Jobs In Chch
New Zealand may be able to gain redundant tradesmen from the Boeing aircraft company in the United States, according to information received by the Department of Labour superintendent in Christchurch (Mr A. J. Peterson).
Mr Peterson said yesterday that his head office had asked him to find if Christchurch manufacturers would be interested in employing any of the men, most of who are skilled in engineering trades. Very little information had been contained in the department’s letter, apart from the fact that Boeing had dismissed 5040 workers last month and expected to put off 18,000 this year. This was after 14,400 redundancy dismissals last year. The president of the engineering and metal trades group of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr A. S. Farrar) said yesterday that the metal engineering trade in Christchurch was desperately short of labour, and skilled workers from Boeing would be of great assistance, especially if the proposed Comaico mill were established here.
