PICTAVIA DEAD

Pictavia which has been avail- ; able to Canterbury breeders for J more than 20 years, died at the • Riccarton Stud yesterday The studmaster. Mr G. H Murfitt. Jun., said that the 28- I year-old son of Nearco and | Lovely Rosa took ill yesterday 1 morning and died in the afternoon. Pictavia. which was bred in England in 1942. stood in the North Island early in his stud career. He went to the Riccarton Stud about 1948 and had been there ever since. Although many of Pictavia’s stock were hardy types he never became a fashionable sire. Nevertheless, his stock won more than $200,000 in stakes. Probably one of his best sons was Picaroon, one of the Dominion's top handicap and weight-for-age stars in the late 1950 s and early 19605. Another was Jimmy Flash, the 1956 New Zealand Cup winner. Shakes, one of Riccarton’s top milers in the last decade, and Harry Lime, a good winner in Melbourne. were other wellperformed sons of Pictavia. He sired Innesfeli, the 1956 Victoria Oaks winner, and Picca Leigh, a useful sprinter on the local scene, and a host of other winners. Although Pictavia had been very lightly patronised in the last few years he still has two or three foals around and covered two mares this breeding season. ’
