Price Rises Called Unwarranted, Unfair
(Neto Zealand Press Association) NELSON, February 3. Prices of essential foodstuffs were increasing rapidly to the serious detriment of the living standards and the purchasing power of workers, the president of the Post Office Association (Mr J. G. Stapleton) said in Nelson today.
The national executive committee of the association is meeting in Nelson. It has directed its attention to what is described as the relentless circle of rising costs being imposed on the wageearner.
The association considered the spate of price increases was unwarranted and unfair, Mr Stapleton said. Retailers, manufacturers and other employers dictated to by large monopolies were
exploiting wage-earners-at a time when most company balance-sheets were recording record profits. Government control was ineffective, and price stabilisation machinery Was useless. Mr Stapleton said the Post Office Association would oppose any economic adjustments which further penalised a section of the community which had lost much as a result of the present price escalation,
