Two men and a youth were killed and three were injured, two seriously, when a car hit. the southern approach of the Forks River bridge, three miles west of Tekapo, at 6.45 p.m. yesterday. Those killed were

The driver of the car, Reginald Woodbury, aged about 27, of 2 Mann Street, Queenstown, and Brian Robertson, also of 65 Duke Street, were admitted to the Timaru Hospital and were reported to be seriously ill last evening. Kevin Davidson, aged about

All were travelling to Christchurch to represent the Wakatipu Rowing Club in the Canterbury rowing regatta at Kerr’s Reach today. The car, a late American model, ran off the road into the end of a temporary Bailey bridge which has been the scene of several accidents. An ambulance from the United States Air Force sat-ellite-tracking station at Mount John reached the scene first and a medical orderly from the station attended the injured. The ambulance then drove the injured men the 68 miles to Timaru. Mr Matheson and Mr B. Robertson were to compete in the maiden fours event at the regatta and Mr Woodbury was to compete in the senior single sculls.
