571 KILLED ON ROADS IN 1969

■ (N.Z. Press Assoeiation) ■WELLINGTON, Jan. 30. The official road toll for 1969 is 571 dead. The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon).said today that in accordance with standard procedure, the figure was arrived at 28 days after the end of the calendar year. By comparison, there were 522 deaths in 1968 and 570 in 1967. “It will be several months yet before we know

how many people were injured, but preliminary estimates place this figure about 19,000,” he said. Mr Gordon said the most significant increase over last year’s figures was among drivers of motorvehicles and cyclists. The number of passengers and pedestrians killed was about the same as in 1968. To noon today 49 traffic deaths this year had been reported to the Transport Department. This time last year the total was 44.
