McManus Beats Carmichael
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) HOBART, j The lowly-ranked United States player J. McManus won the Tasmanian men’s open singles tennis title with a straight set victory over R. Carmichael. McManus, aged 29, is ranked ninth in the United States. He took only an hour and a half to beat Carmichael. 7-5, 6-4. 6-1. His win wa.s a consolation for the United States Davis Cup team of A. Ashe, R. Lutz and S. Smith, who were eliminated in their single* matches. McManus and Carmichael have; been drawn to play each other; again in the Victorian state, championships in Melbourne. In an all-Australian women’s) singles final, Mrs M. Court, aged' 27. beat Miss K. Melville, 6-2,! 16-2.
