Steel Men Strike
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct 15. One hundred Auckland steel erectors went on strike today in support of a claim for a ruling wage rate of $1.20 an hour. The secretary of the Auckland Labourer’s Union (Mr H. Kay), said today that 26 employers were involved, and they did not have a common trade association. This meant that any wage agreement would have to be signed by every one of the employers, and the union had been trying since last January to meet them together.
The employers had made several offers by correspondence but the union had rejected these because it wanted to meet the employers across a table.
Action was taken by the employers today, however, and the parties will meet tomorrow under the auspices of the Auckland Employers Association.
