New Nuclear Test Report
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) STOCKHOLM, October 15. The Soviet Union yesterday held an under-ground nuclear test on the Arctic island of Novaya Zemlya, but Stockholm experts are in dispute over whether it was the most powerful blast yet recorded.
The Stockholm Technological Institute’s geodetic department first reported the blast, describing it as the most powerful so far, with a strength equivalent to five megatons, or five million tons of T.N.T., and recording 7.2 on the Richter scale. But the Seismological Institute in Uppsala promptly issued a bulletin saying that the explosion recorded 6.3 on the scale which was comparable in size with the tests in the area every autumn for the last three years.
