Warning About Cheques
Christchurch shopkeepers have been warned by the police to watch for stolen cheques. Three large city stores recently accepted stolen cheques made out for large amounts. The cheques were cashed although no purchase was made. The police crime-preven-tion officer for Christchurch (Detective Sergeant B. J. Preston) said yesterday that a group of thieves was concentrating on stealing cheque books from cars. The chequebooks were then being sold to other criminals, who passed the cheques off to unwary shopkeepers.
