Plan For Development Of Water Polo Criticised
Delegates to the New Zealand Water Polo Board’s annual meeting in Christchurch at the week-end criticised the development plan presented to the meeting.
Mr B. E. Tremaine (Otago) said the aim of sending a team to the 1976 Olympic Games was setting sights too low. The games in 1972 would be a more realistic target The development plan also indicated European tours in 1973 and 1975, encompassing the World Games.
The original aim of the 1976 Olympic Gaines was adhered to, although many changes were made concerning internal tours and the sites of the senior and junior national championships. The seven members of the incumbent board of control were re-elected, and will retain voting rights at future annual meetings as a result of the failure of a Wellington remit which attempted to restrict their votes to three. Of the 19 votes at the meeting seven, plus the chairman’s easting vote, were in the hands of board members. The chairman (Mr N. R.
Chambers) was appointed to the senior selection panel and the Canterbury under-18 selector-coach (Mr T. M. McGirr) was appointed to the junior panel. Mr McGirr’s main task will be to help select the national secondary schoolboys’ team which will tour Australia in February. A further remit from Wellington, to allow provinces to enter more than one team in the national championships, was defeated and an alternative, to reintroduce the B grade title, was withdrawn by Wellington delegates. Officers elected were.— Chairman, Mr Chambers; secretary, Mr D. F. Stewart; board, Messrs P. Hill, R. B. Erickson, R. A. Leach, E. Tuyn, J. de Haan; delegates, Messrs J. Court (Auckland), R. Bowers (Waikato), P. Foster (Manawatu), R. Ribbins and C. Mcßride (Wellington), S. Guppy (Nelson'), I. L. Gunthorp and M. C. Scott (Canterbury), B. E. Tremaine and M. Timms (Otego); senior selectors, Messrs W. H. Dyson (convenor), Robbins, Chambers; junior selectors, Messrs Dyson (convenor), McGirr, A. Anderson (Auckland).
