FLUORIDE PROJECT

Move To Add It To Milk

ffl.Z. Press Assn — Copyright) LONDON, Oct 8.

A revolutionary proposal to fight tooth decay in children by introducing fluoride to milk instead of water is being considered by the Hampshire County Council. The “Sunday Times” reports that the council may seek permission to add fluoride to milk drunk by children up to 12 years old. It is hoped that such a pilot scheme would demonstrate that the selective addition of fluoride would be a more acceptable and much cheaper alternative to fluoridating all water consumed by all members of a community.

Councillor Edgar Borrow, who has proposed the scheme, said: "To treat the 1.4 thousand million gallons of water supplied to the population each year would require 14,000 tons of fluoride worth more the £lm, whereas to treat the 225 million gallons of milk consumed by expectant and nursing mothers and children up to the age of 12 would only cost £260 for the chemicals.”

Mr Borrow added that it was only children up to the age of 12 who really benefited from fluoride.
