J. Brabham (Australia), driving a car of his own design, was second, and J. Rindt (West Germany, Lotus) was third. Only eight of the 20 starters finished. Ickx has taken second place in the standings for the world drivers’ championship. First place has already been won by J. Stewart (Scotland), who clinched it early this month with victory in the Italian Grand Prix, at Monza. Stewart, driving a French Matra, was forced out of Saturday’s Canadian race oh the thirty-third of the 90 laps after a collision with Ickx. Ickx’s official average speed was 112.76 m.p.h. over the 220-mile course. Brabham averaged 111.91 m.p.h. and Rindt 111.77 m.p.h. Provisionally fourth, J. Beltoise France, Matra), was a lap behind the first three. B. McLaren was fifth in a car of his own design, three laps back. Another Matra, driven by J. Servos-Gavin, was sixth. His ;car was one of two four-wheel-drive machines in the race. The other, driven by J. Miles (Britain, Lotus) did not finish. Both Ickx and Brabham set

a lap record for the 2.45-mile circuit with equal times of Imin 18.1 sec (114.78 m.p.h.). G. Hill (Britain, Lotus) retired on the forty-second lap with a broken camshaft D. Hulme (New Zealand, McLaren) went out on the ninth lap when his car was lying fourth, after a ' distributor arm broke, and J. Surtees (Britain) gave up on the fourteenth lap after engine trouble. Placings in the world drivers' championship after the Canadian Grand Prix, ninth of the 11 championship races, were:— J. Stewart (Britain). 60 points, 1: J.
