Gold Star Win To Marwood

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Set back to the end of the field when his car went into a spin in the first lap, the Papakura driver, D. Marwood, charged his 5-litre Chevrolet Eisert through to a popular win at Pukekohe yesterday in the first Formula A gold star race in New Zealand. Marwood showed the advantage of an early start preparing for the debut'of the new single-seater formula. His meticulously-prepared Eisert never missed a beat in the feature race, while other contenders were handicapped by unfamiliar machinery far from racing trim. It was obvious from the start of the meeting that the early beginning to the sea-

son had caught some drivers napping. Several of the events became processions, with success going to those who had done their homework. Scratchings were numerous. The big saloon cars provided tight competition. I. Dawson, of Manurewa, driving a Ford Mustang, beat the Chevrolet Camaro of S. Black, of Morrinsville, after a tussle. The former champion, R. Anderson, of Auckland, performed splendidly in a BMW 2002 for third place, close behind the two much bigger American cars and in front of another Mustang. Fiat 125 s carried off the first three placings in a race for locally assembled production saloon pars and the second two of these staged . a

classic finish, door to door. The Fiat supremacy is a pointer to the likely winner of the Benson and Hedges 500-mile race in November. Results:
