Heating Systems In Trains Damaged
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, July 4.
Vandals are damaging the heating systems on the Dunedin-Mosgiel suburban trains.
The district traffic manager of the Railways Department in Dunedin, Mr C. L. Brown, said today that many of the small brass knobs which controlled the convection and heat in the carriages had been removed.
A reporter who. inspected
the carriages today found that in seven of 11 inspected the heat control knobs were missing.
“The heating units are provided at considerable expense for the comfort of the commuters, and this abuse of the equipment is our thanks,” Mr Brown said.
The knob, at the base of the beaters, allows heat to be stored when the carriage is not in use, but when it is removed, the heat is lost.
“The replacement of the knobs is just extra work for the railway men, but I feel that people using these trains should treat them with consideration and report anyone interfering with the heating system,” Mr Brown said. “We can’t hope to keep an efficient heating system in the suburban trains for commuters, if these same commuters are going to keep damaging the heating equipment”
N.Z. Programmes.—Twentythree per cent of all programmes screened on television by the N.Z.B.C. were produced in New Zealand, the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Adams-Schneider) told Parliament yesterday.— (P.A.)
